Bovine Mastitis

Mastitis (commonly known as saroo) is one of the most dangerous contagious disease of dairy animals. Ut of all the livestock diseases in Pakistan, many field surveys have ranked mastitis as number one disease of dairy animals. It is the inflammation of udder that often leads to infection.

Rawalpindi district has seven tehsils including;

Population of Animals in Rawalpindi District

According to Poultry Research Institute (PRI), Rawalpindi; 

Population of cows — 252,298 cows

Population of buffalos — 131,212 buffalos

Population of Lactating Animals in Rawalpindi District

According to PRI, at one time, only 40% animals are lactating. So, according to this calculation;

Population of lactating cows — 104,950 cows

Population of lactating buffalos — 69,920 buffalos

Prevalence of Mastitis in Rawalpindi District

According to PRI Rawalpindi:

Prevalence of mastitis in cows – 23%

Prevalence of mastitis in buffalos – 19 %
